Mr. A. Donovan
Mr. Donovan grew up in
the Bronx, within walking distance of the Walton Campus. He worked at Walton for
ten years and has been with Discovery High School for the last three.

Ms. M. Harter
Ms. Harter
is from Illinois where she attended the University of Illinois and received her
B.F.A. in Fine and Applied Arts Graphic Design. She worked in the graphic design
and advertising fields in Chicago for many years as a designer and art director.
After moving to NY she entered her second career as a teacher in NYC. She attended
The College of New Rochelle in New York where she received her M.S. in Special
Education. She is one of the founding teachers of Discovery H.S. which started
in 2003. Mrs. Harter teaches Special Education English and art. She integrates
both disciplines while teaching in this arts-integrated school.
Ms.
L. Lai
Ms. Lee began her teaching career at Newtown High School in Queens,
New York. She went on to teach at Fashion Industries High School where she eventually
became Director of Admissions and the Work Study Coordinator. Ms. Lai remained
at Fashion Industries for eleven years until she transferred to Discovery High
School after the birth of her second child. At Discovery High School, Ms. Lai
teaches Studio Art and is the Arts Coordinator. With a background in Fine Arts
and Fashion Design, Ms. Lai hopes to share her love of creating with her students
at Discovery High School.
Ms. M. Martin
Ms. Martin
grew up in the Philippines. She has been teaching high school Math in America
for six years; one year in California and five years in New York. Before coming
here, she had a lot of experience teaching Math in the Philippines. She received
her Masters from Bank Street College in New York. She majored in Administration
and Supervision.
Ms. J. Powell
Ms. Powell received
her MS in Global Affairs from New York University with a focus on International
Relations, International Law, and Human Rights. She is currently receiving her
MS in Education from Long Island University. While at NYU, her thesis included
studies about NGOs in the Caribbean community (CARICOM) with a special interest
relating their religious and cultural beliefs towards the HIV/AIDS pandemic and
the role international law plays in helping to curtail the spread of the virus.
She also received her BA in History & Political Science in 2003 from Oakwood
College, after which she ventured off to Italy to study Italian language and culture.
She has worked for various corporations and not-for-profits including Global Kids,
Inc., McKinsey & Co., ASCAP, New York Cares, and Action Center after-school
program. She has a strong passion for working with urban youth and has conducted
various activists campaigns and workshops about environmental justice issues,
campaign for education (U.S., chapter), and public policy issues. She has traveled
to France, Spain, England, Sweden, Greece, Belgium and Switzerland, and throughout
the CARICOM.
Ms. E. Serrano
Ms. Serrano was born
in Canovanas Puerto Rico. She graduated with a bachelors degree in Home Economics
from the University of Puerto Rico in 1970. She finished another degree in Science
Studies from the University of Puerto Rico in 1973. On May 1995, she graduated
from City College of New York with a Masters degree in Bilingual Education. She
has been teaching for 36 years; 12 years in Puerto Rico and the rest in New York
City. In New York, she has taught in Clinton High School, William C. Bryant in
Queens and at Theodore Roosevelt High School for 20 years until they closed the
school. At Theodore Roosevelt she worked as Coordinator of Student Affairs (COSA)
for 7 years and Senior Advisor for 2 years. She has been very successful with
her students and she has received a lot of payback from them. One of her students
wrote her name as a reference for a job at the White House. She received the call
and highly recommended the student who eventually got the job. This is one of
her successes as a a teacher.

Ms. L. Zalanowski
Ms.
Zalanowski has lived in New York her entire life. She completed her undergrad
degree in Ithaca New York and moved to Manhattan in 1996. She worked for Americorps
for 2 years and then began her career as a classroom teacher. She has been teaching
in public schools since 1998 and absolutely loves working with teenagers. She's
taught Math and Science and is now fortunate enough to be teaching Yoga at Discovery.
Besides teaching, she loves traveling and believes it to be essential to the process
of understanding and thinking critically about our world.
